Franklin Bachelder Simmons was an American sculptor born in Webster, Maine in 1839. He spent most of his childhood in Bath and Lewiston, Maine. Simmons started sculpting and painting during childhood and studied with John Adams Jackson. He attended Bates College (then called the Maine State Seminary) in 1858. Simmons's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from a few hundred dollars to over a hundred thousand dollars. His most famous works include 'The Promised Land' (1873-74) and the statue of Ulysses S. Grant in the United States Capitol Rotunda. Simmons died in Rome, Italy in 1913.
