John Heartfield was a German artist and photographer. He was born Helmut Herzfeld in Berlin, Germany in 1891. He was a pioneer in the use of art as a political weapon and is best known for his anti-Nazi and anti-fascist photomontages. He also created book jackets and stage sets for contemporary playwrights. He died in East Berlin, East Germany in 1968.
