Biography:

S. Dhanapal was an Indian artist born in Chennai in 1919 and died in 2000. He was a master of modernism and one of the earliest artists that Indian modern art could be proud of. His figurative sculptures drew from Indian tradition and sensibilities, be it his thematic divisions, techniques, iconography, and iconometry, particularly the grammar of Chola, Pallava as well as other ancient Indian sculptures. He studied at the Government College of Art and Crafts in Chennai and later joined the institution as a teacher. His sculpture 'Village Deity' is one of his most famous works, created in 1987 and exhibited at the Cholamandal Artists’ Village Injambakkam, Chennai, India. Dhanapal's artworks are part of the Google Arts & Culture platform.
