Sylvia Palacios Whitman is a Chilean-American artist known for her performances and installations. She was born on August 25, 1941, in Osorno, Chile. Whitman studied painting and sculpture at the University of Chile's Fine Arts School in Santiago before moving to New York City in 1961. There she became involved with dance and theater, performing with Trisha Brown and The Trisha Brown Dance Company from 1970 to 1973. Whitman began staging her own performances between 1974 and 1984 at notable venues such as the Whitney Museum and Guggenheim Museum in New York, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and Manhattan galleries like The Kitchen and Sonnabend Gallery. Her work often combines visual elements with movement to create a unique form of performance art.
