Her early life was marked by adversity, with her father passing away when she was just one year old and her mother following suit when she was eight. This led to her being sold to a household in Wuhu at the age of 13.
In 1917, Chen Xiuqing began her artistic journey under the tutelage of Hong Ye in Shanghai. She later enrolled in the Western Painting Division at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, France, and then at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. Her time in France significantly influenced her style, which blended Chinese and Western elements.
