Jack Elrod was an American cartoonist born on March 29, 1924, in Gainesville, Georgia, USA. He is best known for his work on the comic strip Mark Trail. Elrod began working on the strip as an artist in 1950 and took over as the main artist in 1978 when the creator, Ed Dodd, retired due to failing eyesight. Elrod continued to draw the strip under both their names until his death on February 3, 2016, at the age of 91. Prior to becoming a cartoonist, Elrod served in the United States Navy during World War II as a meteorologist on board the USS Teton.
