James Galanos was an American fashion designer and couturier. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1924 and died in 2016. Galanos is known for designing clothing for America's social elite, including Nancy Reagan, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and others. He studied at the Traphagen School of Fashion in New York in the early 1940s and was later formed at a formidable triumvirate of influential design houses. He began with Hattie Carnegie, the designer known for dressing America's elite, and later moved on to work with Jeanne Paquin and finally with the house of Robert Piguet in Paris. Galanos returned to the United States in 1952 and opened his own fashion house in New York City. He was known for his elegant style and high-quality craftsmanship, and his designs were often featured in Vogue and other fashion magazines. Galanos was also a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and was inducted into the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame. He was awarded the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in 1954 and the Coty American Fashion Critics Award in 1958. In 1962, he was the first American designer to be invited to show his collection in Paris. Galanos was also known for his philanthropy, and he established the James G. Galanos Foundation in 1994 to support young fashion designers. He was awarded the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2000. Galanos retired in 1998 and passed away in 2016.
