John Kay, born Joachim Fritz Krauledat on April 12, 1944, in Tilsit, Germany, is a German-born Canadian singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the rock band Steppenwolf, which he founded in 1967 in Los Angeles. Steppenwolf sold over 25 million records worldwide and had 13 Billboard Hot 100 singles, including three top 10 hits: 'Born to Be Wild', 'Magic Carpet Ride', and 'Rock Me'. Kay was the only original member involved in the band from 1980 to 2018, and John Kay & Steppenwolf toured and released albums during that time. Kay was born in Germany but emigrated to Canada and changed his name when he became a musician. He is known for his distinctive voice and dark sunglasses, as well as his activism and conservation efforts.
