Marcello Nizzoli was an Italian artist, architect, industrial and graphic designer. He was born in Boretto, Italy in 1887 and died in Camogli, Italy in 1969. Nizzoli is best known for his work as the chief designer for Olivetti, where he was responsible for the iconic Lettera 22 portable typewriters in 1950. He also worked as a painter and architect. Nizzoli received the Compasso d'Oro prize in 1954 for the Lettera 22 and the Illinois Institute of Technology chose the Lettera 22 as the best designed product of the last 100 years in 1959. He was also awarded the Compasso d'Oro prize 16 times by Italy's Association of Industrial Design between 1954 and 2001.
