Mikael Melbye is a Danish opera singer, stage director and painter. He was born on March 15, 1955 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Melbye studied under Kirsten Hermansen and made his debut as an operatic baritone at the Royal Danish Theatre in 1975 with Mozart's opera 'Cosi fan tutte'. He gained international recognition for his performances of Figaro in Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville'. Melbye has sung over 50 different roles and was ranked as one of the top 15 highest-paid operatic singers worldwide. In addition to his singing career, he also worked as a stage director and portrait painter. He painted a portrait of Queen Margrethe II which hangs in the Christiansborg Palace's Drabantsalen. Melbye was awarded Knight of the Order of Dannebrog in 1996.
