Todd James is a contemporary American artist best known for his brilliantly colored cartoonish paintings. He began his career as a young adult in the early 1980s in the New York City subway system, where he painted graffiti under the name REAS. His work fuses his experience as a graffiti artist with art history, pop culture, sexuality, and violence. James is a multidisciplinary creator whose paintings are colorful and informed by cartoons, graffiti culture, and painters such as Willem de Kooning, Peter Saul, Henri Matisse, and Franz Kline. His paintings and installations have been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including both the 2001 and 2015 Venice Biennale.
