Tomoyama, also known as Hōzan, is a Japanese ceramic artist born in Shigaraki in 1936. He is known for his work in the Satsuma style and has put his signature on many of his pieces. Tomoyama's work is influenced by the Venetian Renaissance palazzo style, which is symbolic of wealth and abundance. He is also known for his contributions to Japanese Buddhist art and has been the subject of a book by John M. Rosenfield titled 'Preserving the Dharma: Hōzan Tankai and Japanese Buddhist Art of the Early Modern Era'. In addition to his work in ceramics, Tomoyama is also a painter and decorator.
