Die ersten ausgestellten Werke von Schreyer waren militärische und historische Szenen. Nach einer Studienreise nach Frankreich und Nordafrika ließ er sich von 1862 bis 1870 in Paris nieder, als er nach Frankfurt zurückkehrte. In Paris präsentierte er arabische Szenen, die im Vergleich zu denen von Delacroix und Fromentin bewundernswert waren. Er war nicht mit seinen Gemälden und oft wiederholten Motiven. Ein umgekehrtes Bild des Reiters in dieser Arbeit erscheint als zentrale Figur des arabischen Kriegers (Milwaukee Art Center).
