Ende 1894 ging Akseli Gallen-Kallela nach Berlin, um die Grundlagen der Druckerei zu erlernen, die aufgrund der Beliebtheit japanischer Holzschnitte und des dekorativen Jugendstils eine neue Vogue genoss. Seine Reise wurde kurz geschnitten, als seine Tochter Marjatta im März 1895 an Diphteria starb. Die Blume des Todes ist ein Denkmal für sie. Es wurde auf eine Scheibe Kiefernholz geschnitzt, weich und grobkörnig, aber der Druck ist subtil und zart. Das beigefügte Gedicht wird vom Künstler selbst:
