Anna Gerresheim, 15 Jahre älter als Elisabeth von Eicken, war auch fast ein Jahrzehnt vor Paul Müller-Kaempff im Alter. Sie stammte aus einer bürgerlichen Familie mit vielen Kindern in Ribnitz, die finanziell umarmt wurde und zunächst erwartete die künstlerisch begabte Anna ein respektables Einkommen aus ihrem Gemälde zu verdienen. Dies hat sich vor allem auf die Porträtierung bezogen. Aber Anna Gerresheim befreite sich frühzeitig von dieser Erwartung. Studienreisen nach Dänemark, England und 1883 nach Paris führten ihren Blick auf neues künstlerisches Gebiet, wobei sie die entscheidenden Impulse von Barbizon erhielt.
