Obwohl das gegenwärtige Gemälde als Werk von Van Dyck ins Museum eintrat, sind der reservierte Ausdruck des Sitters und die sorgfältige Handhabung der Details des Kostüms charakteristisch für die Arbeit von de Vos. Dieser hoch angesehene Antwerpener Portraitmaler ist für seine würdigen Porträts bekannt, die dennoch eine charmante Bescheidenheit erhalten. Er zeichnete sich besonders durch Gruppenporträts von Kindern aus.
