Mit seiner Kombination aus Naturlandschaft und klassischer Architektur war die Stadt Tivoli eine offensichtliche Wahl des Themas, das Turner seit Jahrzehnten faszinierte. Diese unvollendete Leinwand scheint auf einem Aquarellgemälde von Tivoli, ausgestellt an der Royal Academy über zwanzig Jahre früher. Der Vordergrund wird vom Fluss Aniene dominiert, ruhig und immer noch, wo es unter dem Tempel des Sibyl, bevor über den Rand eines großen Wasserfalls. Die intensive Weißkonzentration im Zentrum der Zusammensetzung stellt das Licht der auf der Wasseroberfläche reflektierten Sonne dar.
