Diese Skizze des St Gotthard-Passes, der von Luzern und Altdorf nach Bellinzona verläuft, war eine der wichtigsten Routen über die Alpen für Reisende von J.M.W. Turner (1775–1851) Tag. Dieses Bild zeigt, dass der Künstler topographische Genauigkeit und Realismus aufgibt, um Stimmung und Atmosphäre durch Farbe und Geste zu wecken. Die knackige Präzision von Turners früheren Zeichnungen der Alpen wird hier durch ein weites Unschärfen von zerbrochenen Fragmenten von Fels und Luft ersetzt, in denen die Landschaft fast zerfällt.
