J.-B. Carpeaux war einer der bekanntesten Meister der öffentlichen und ornamentalen Skulptur in Frankreich aus dem 19. Jahrhundert. Nach dem Studium in Rom, machte er seine erste öffentliche Auftritt in Paris 1862, mit einer Komposition mit dem Titel Ugolino und seine Söhne, die von Dante inspiriert wurde
