Dieses Gemälde scheint von Victor Hugos 1827 Gedicht „La Douleur du pacha“ inspiriert worden zu sein (The Pasha’s Grief). Im Gedicht verzichtet ein fiktiver osmanischer Potentate auf seine Verantwortung, einschließlich seiner Domänen und seiner Subjekte, wegen unerklärlicher Traurigkeit: „Was ist falsch mit diesem Pascha, den Krieg ruft / Und wer, traurig und verträumt, weint wie eine Frau? . . . / Sein Nubian Tiger ist gestorben. „
