Dieser runde Panoramablick auf Versailles wurde zwischen 1818 und 1819 in Kingston, New York und New York City gemalt. Vanderlyn benutzte zahlreiche Skizzen (Senate House Museum, Kingston, New York), die er 1814 in Versailles gemacht hatte. Die Perspektive wurde sorgfältig auf die Kreisform eingestellt. Das Gemälde wurde ursprünglich in der von Vanderlyn 1818 erbauten Rotunda an der nordöstlichen Ecke des Rathausparks in New York ausgestellt. Sein Auftritt war nicht so erfolgreich, wie Vanderlyn es wünschte. Auf der Suche nach einem Gewinn tourte Vanderlyn intermittierend mit dem Panorama bis zu seinem Tod. Der Künstler zeigte sich auf Zar Alexander I und König Frederick William II von Preußen rechts vom Basin de Latone.
