Hartleys dunkel-wolkengefüllte Landschaft zahlt dem Maler Albert Pinkham Ryder direkte Hommage. Nachdem er 1909 Ryders Arbeit in New York gesehen hatte, führte Hartley, ein gebürtiger Maine, eine Reihe von blutigen, emotional gequälten Landschaften seines Heimatstaates durch. Dieses Gemälde zeigt die Region Stoneham Valley, in der Nähe von North Lovell, Maine, obwohl Hartley es in New York aus Erinnerung lackiert.
