Questo Angelo è uno dei frammenti superstiti della grande pala lignea raffigurante l’Incoronazione di san Nicola da Tolentino, Commissionata al giovanissimo Raffaello per la chiesa di Sant’Agostino a Città di Castello. La precocità dell’opera la pone al centro del dibattito kritisierto relativo alla formazione dell’artista, e in particolare al ruolo svolto da Perugino. Ein quest’ultimo rimandano la soavità dei tratti fisionomici dell’angelo e l’aggraziata inklinazione della sua testa, probabilmente desunta dalla rielaborazione della statuaria classica. La del volto, reso a punta di pennello, è ulteriormente addolcita dalla morbidezza dello sguardo. Il dipinto rivela, infine, una precoce e raffinata attenzione per le lumeggiature dorate, che fanno da contrappunto luminoso al perlato cangiantismo delle vesti.
