In “The Old Fortress Commandant”, der Autor hat es wichtig gefunden, ein scheinbar unbeobachtetes Ereignis zu offenbaren; in einer romantischen Landschaft von einer alten Festung sitzt der Kommandant mit seinem Hund, rauchen ein Rohr und erinnert an alte Zeiten. Die psychologische Feinheit, die geheimnisvolle und emphatisch leichte Stimmung dieses Gemäldes ist charakteristisch für andere Werke von Spitzweg. Der Autor ist in einer Reflexion darüber beschäftigt, wie organisiert, erfüllt und friedlich Einsamkeit sein kann, im Gegensatz zu der Tragödie und Einsamkeit, die manchmal in einem aktiven sozialen Leben verborgen liegen kann.
