William Hodges malte einen Blick in Dusky Bay, Neuseeland aus Aquarell und Bleistift Studien auf seiner Rückkehr nach England. Sein Ansatz zum Thema Exploration und erste Begegnung folgt seiner klassischen Ausbildung. Der „blöde Krieger“ im Vordergrund stellt den Māori-Mann Hodges während der Dusky Bay zusammen. Ein Crewmitglied erzählte, dass der Mann etwa 60 Jahre alt war und etwa sechs Meter hoch stand. A Blick in Dusky Bay gilt als das früheste Ölgemälde von Māori in der europäischen Tradition. Es ist eine romantische Aussicht, die Dusky Bay als eine sublime Landschaft darstellt, beladen mit Drama, wo die Natur Held ist. Die Arbeit von Hodges zeigt, wie Entdeckerkunst Kapitän James Cooks Abenteuer unterstützte und wie die britischen Traditionen der Landschaftsmalerei in den Pazifik aufgenommen wurden.
