Gakutei Harunobu, also known as Harunobu Sugawara, was a Japanese artist born in Edo (now Tokyo) in 1786 and died in 1868. He was known for his work in the ukiyo-e style of woodblock printing, a technique that was widely used in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868). Gakutei studied under Shuei and Hokkei and later moved to Osaka where he designed many woodblock prints. His works are known for their vivid colors, glazes, and transparency, which are achieved through the use of water-based inks. Gakutei's art reflects Heian court society at its peak and continues to be recognized as an important contribution to Japanese literature and culture.
