Stavros Stavropoulos, also known as Stavros Nicholas Stavropoulos, is a Greek-American gastroenterologist born in New York in 1980. He is recognized for being the first operator to perform POEM in the Western hemisphere in 2009 and for being the highest volume POEM operator in the US. He received his medical education at Yale and Columbia universities, and completed all his clinical training at Columbia Presbyterian. He has served as a gastroenterologist in various hospitals in the United States, including Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital and John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital. He is also a pioneer of endoscopic surgery and has led the gastroenterology department at Archbold Memorial Hospital since 2022. Dr. Stavropoulos has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work, including being recognized as a top doctor by US News Health and being awarded honorary fellowship to the Japanese Society of Gastroenterological Endoscopy. He is also a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). Dr. Stavropoulos has published numerous research works and has made significant contributions to the field of gastroenterology. He is currently affiliated with the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG).
