Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh was a British statesman and politician. He served as the Secretary to the Viceroy of Ireland from 1795 to 1796, where he worked to suppress the Rebellion of 1798 and secure passage of the Irish Act of Union in 1800. From 1812 to 1822, he served as the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, playing a central role in the management of the coalition that defeated Napoleon and serving as British plenipotentiary at the Congress of Vienna. He was known for his conservative policies and support for harsh measures against agitation for reform. He committed suicide while in office in 1822.
