Biography:

Alecos Levidis is a Greek painter and architect, born in Athens in 1944. While still in school, he took painting lessons with Kostas Malamos and Alekos Kontopoulos. He later studied Theatre Direction at the Université du Théâtre des Nations in Paris (1963-1964) and Architecture at the École d’Architecture of the University of Geneva-E.A.U.G. (1964-1969).

Artistic Career

Alecos Levidis has worked extensively as a book cover designer and art editor, collaborating with various publishing houses, including Agra, Crete University Press, Athens Concert Hall, Benaki Museum, Estia, Kedros, Ikaros, Themelio, Astra, and Alexandreia. He has also created sets for the theatre and murals for private homes. As a painter, he has engaged in research on issues of painting and published relevant work. In 1994, Alecos Levidis translated and edited Book 35 of the “Natural History” by Pliny the Elder, “On Ancient Greek Painting”, which was awarded the Academy of Athens Prize the following year. He has participated in conventions in Greece and abroad, discussing ancient Greek, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine painting, colors, and color mixing.

Alecos Levidis's work can be found in various collections, including The Sotiris Felios Collection in Athens, Greece. Some of his notable paintings include Winter Beach or the Luck of Aktaion and Gradiva, which showcase his unique blend of realism and surrealism. In 2007, Alecos Levidis visited Princeton University as an Artist in Residence. In June 2021, he was elected a Member of the Second Section of the Academy of Athens, where he now holds the seat for “Painting”.
