Biography:
Hércules Florence was a Monegasque-Brazilian painter and inventor, known for inventing photography in Brazil in 1834, three years before Daguerre, using the matrix negative/positive, still in use. He referred to his process as photographie in French in 1834, at least four years before John Herschel coined the English word photography. Florence was born in Torquay, Devon, England, and died in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil.
