Biography:
Armand Marseille was a German-Russian entrepreneur and toy manufacturer, born in Saint-Pétersbourg in 1856 and died in Cobourg in 1925. He is best known for his porcelain dolls' heads, which he started producing in 1885 after acquiring the Liebermann & Wegescher porcelain factory in Köppelsdorf, Germany.
Marseille's company, Armand Marseille, became one of the largest and best-known bisque doll head manufacturers in the world, supplying heads to a variety of German doll makers and producing over 1000 dolls' heads a day. His most successful moulds were 390 and 370, used for over thirty years and fitted to composition and stuffed leather bodies respectively.
Marseille made a large variety of baby dolls, dolly-faced child dolls and character dolls, with brand names including Floradora, Queen Louise, Darling Dolly, The Dream Baby and Just Me. The 1894 Floradora design came in various sizes from 23 cm (9.1 in) to 107 cm (42 in).
