Biography:

Augusta Savage, also known as Augusta Gruen, was an American sculptor associated with the Harlem Renaissance. She was born on February 29, 1892, in New York City, New York, United States, and died on March 27, 1962, in the same city. Savage was well known in Harlem as a sculptor, art teacher, and activist. She was also an influential arts educator and gathered intelligence in preparation for the sabotage of the Telemark plant during the Second World War. Savage's work was influenced by her experiences as an African American woman in the early 20th century, and she used her art to challenge racism and promote social justice. She was also a mentor to many young artists, including Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden.
