Born: 1922

Death: 1989

Biography:

Aviva Uri Levin was an Israeli painter, born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1922. She studied dance with Gertrude Kraus and painting with Moshe Castel and David Hendler. Aviva Uri was known for her unusual appearance, wearing white face makeup and dark eye-shadow, and oversized black clothing. She deliberately falsified her age, claiming she was born in 1927.

Artistic Style and Influences

Aviva Uri's expressive drawings focused on line and composition, linking her to the "New Horizons" group. However, her abstract drawings suggest an alternative to the abstract art being created in the country. Instead of oils, she created drawings on paper; instead of the professional mixing of colors, she used no coloration; instead of Paris, she was influenced by Japan and China, or other individualists such as Hans Hartung. Aviva Uri's free line influenced younger artists, such as Raffi Lavie.

Aviva Uri received numerous awards and prizes throughout her career, including:

  • Sandberg Prize for Israeli Art in 1976
  • Gutman Prize in 1989
