Biography:
Bernard te Gempt was a Dutch painter, draftsperson, and pen artist born on 1826-04-25 at Batenburg and deceased on 1879-01-04 in Amsterdam (city). He was a remarkable figure of Dutch Romanticism, known for his paintings of dogs and other animals. He studied under his father and also at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, where he was a pupil of Jean Baptiste Madou. He specialized in paintings of recent history and in portraits, and was a friend of William II of the Netherlands. He painted the king's inauguration in 1840, and many members of the royal family. His pupils included Jan Daniël Beijnon, Johannes Arnoldus Boland, Conradijn Cunaeus, Bernard te Gempt, Hendrik Hollander, Willem Johann Martens, Johan Heinrich Neuman, Jan Frederik Tack, and Antonie Frederik Zürcher.
