Brush Development Co. was a British company based in Loughborough, England. It was originally established as Brush Electrical Engineering Co. Ltd. in 1888 by Charles Francis Brush, an American inventor and entrepreneur. The company initially focused on the production of arc lamps and dynamos, but later expanded into other areas of electrical engineering, including the development of electric locomotives, generators, and transformers. In 1945, the company established a subsidiary called Brush Development Co. to focus on the development of new technologies and products. The company was responsible for the development of the Paper Tape Recorder in 1946, which was one of the earliest examples of digital recording technology. Brush Development Co. was later acquired by Hawker Siddeley Group in 1966, which was then acquired by Rolls-Royce plc in 1987. The company's legacy lives on through its contributions to the development of electrical engineering and digital recording technology.
