Carl Zuckmayer was a German author and playwright. He was born on December 27, 1896, in Nackenheim, Germany, and died on January 18, 1977, in Visp, Switzerland. His works often dealt critically with many aspects of German society and history. He is best known for his plays 'Schinderhannes' (1927), 'Der Hauptmann von Köpenick' (The Captain of Köpenick, 1931), and 'Des Teufels General' (The Devil's General, 1946).
