Biography:

Cecil Calvert Beall (1892–1970) was an American commercial illustrator and portrait painter. He did watercolor art and drawings for magazines and comic books. Beall designed posters for the United States government for war loan drives during World War II. He was born in Washington, D.C. and started working as a photographer for a photo agency when he was sixteen years old. He began working for the Washington Post in 1933 and for the The Washington Daily News in 1935, where he was promoted to chief photographer in 1940. Beall became a Marine combat photographer during World War II, covering the Battle of Iwo Jima and the Battle of Okinawa. He was awarded the Air Medal for his coverage. Beall captured the famous photograph 'Faith and Confidence' in 1957, which won the 1958 Pulitzer Prize for Photography. He also received awards from the National Headliners Club, the United Press International News Pictures Contest, and the National Press Photographers Association. Beall died in 1970.
