Biography:

Christina Ellen Stead was an Australian novelist, short story writer, journalist and translator. She was born in Sydney on 17 July 1902 and died in Sydney on 31 March 1983. Her fictional works, often bitingly parodic and politically astute, increasingly reflected her Marxist leanings, honed over forty-two years of writing. Over a fifty-year career, Stead produced twelve novels, two collections of stories and four novellas, with their location and subject matter differing wildly. She is best remembered as the author of The Man Who Loved Children (1940), a depiction of dysfunctional family life based on her own childhood experiences.
