Biography:
Chu-jan, also known as Juran, was a Chinese landscape painter who lived during the late Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms and early Northern Song periods. He was a native of Chiang-ning (modern Nanking) and was a monk at the K'ai-yuan Temple. Chu-jan originally specialized in painting the southern scenery of Kiangnan. He was known for his painting style, which followed the styles of Wang Wei, Tung Yuan, and established a style of his own. He became one of the Four Masters of the Song Dynasty.
