Biography:

Edward Miles Richardson (1812-1869) was an English sculptor, archaeologist, restorer and lithographer. He was born in London and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1832. Richardson developed an extensive practice as a sculptor of funerary monuments, executing a large number of military memorials. He also specialized in the restoration of medieval tombs. In 1848, he carved two memorials for Canterbury Cathedral, commemorating the officers and men of the 16th Lancers and the 31st Regiment, killed during the First Sikh War. He also carved the monument to Major-General Sir Robert Dick, who died during the same conflict. Richardson's works are known for their chaste and classic feeling, and his overall effect is often described as pleasing and picturesque.
