Biography:
Emo Verkerk is a Dutch painter, engraver, sculptor, and photographer. He was born in Amsterdam in 1955 and studied at Ateliers '63 in Haarlem. Verkerk has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, and has been faithful to the genre of portraiture throughout his career. He has captured the likeness of celebrated figures and has painted portraits of people who have moved him after reading their biographies. Verkerk has received several awards and honors, including the Buning Brongers Award in 1980, the Royal grant for The Art of Painting in 1981, the Travel grant for residence in New York (PSI) in 1983, the Hendrik de Vries Award of the city Groningen in 1993, and the Buning Brongers Award for his entire career in 2000. His works are held in numerous private and public collections, including the European Parliament's Contemporary Art Collection.
