Biography:
The artist known as 'Follower of Joachim Beuckelaer' was a Flemish painter who specialized in market and kitchen scenes with elaborate displays of food and household equipment. He was born in Antwerp around 1533 and was likely the son of the painter Mattheus Beuckeleer and the grandson of the painter Cornelis de Beuckelaer. He possibly learned to paint in the workshop of his uncle, the Dutch painter Pieter Aertsen, who had married his aunt Kathelijne Beuckelaer. He became an independent master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1560 and remained active in Antwerp throughout his career. He developed themes pioneered in painting by Aertsen, but surpassed his presumed master in skill. He was reportedly not getting high prices for his works during his lifetime. He died in Antwerp around 1570/4.
