Biography:
L'Ortolano, also known as Giovanni Battista Benvenuti, was an Italian painter of the Ferrara School, active in the Renaissance period. He was born in Ferrara around 1480. His name, L'Ortolano, means 'the kitchen-gardener' in Italian. He was recorded in Ferrara in 1512, 1520, and 1524. His style is close to that of other Ferrarese painters of the time, such as Dosso Dossi and Garofalo.
