Biography:

Giuseppe Lironi was an Italian artist born in Como, Italy in 1689 and died in 1749. He was a sculptor and a member of a family of Ticinese sculptors. He produced works in Rome, including sculptures in San Giovanni in Laterano. He is attributed to the 'Statue of St. Bruno of Cologne' (1732) in the Mafra National Palace in Mafra, Portugal. This marble statue represents the founder of the Carthusian Order in 1084, Saint Bruno of Cologne, with a shaved head, beardless and wearing the habit of the Carthusian Order. The statue is considered one of the most important works of the Italian Baroque in Portugal.
