Henri Joseph Duwée (1810-1884) The Pretty Girl from Arles. Henri Joseph Duwée was born in Brussels in 1810, the son of the celebrated painter Henri Duwee, the young man soon showed a precocious talent as an artist. He took his first lessons from his father, and later studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. He was a pupil of François-Joseph Navez, who was a leading figure in the Belgian neoclassical movement. Duwée's early works were influenced by the style of his teacher, but he soon developed his own unique approach. He became known for his portraits and genre scenes, which often depicted elegant women in luxurious settings. Duwée's work was well received by critics and collectors, and he exhibited regularly at the Salon in Brussels. He also traveled extensively throughout Europe, and his work was influenced by the different cultures and art movements he encountered. Duwée died in Brussels in 1884.
