Hermen Rode

Place: Lübeck

Biography:

Hermen Rode was a German Gothic painter who lived and worked in Lübeck. Very little is known about his life, but it is believed that he owned a house on Johannisstrasse street in the city, indicating a certain degree of wealth and fame. He created several altarpieces, including one signed with his name, which is now housed at St. Anne's Museum in Lübeck. His works are also found in Sweden, where they were likely made for a Swedish market, featuring depictions of national saints. Rode's art style displays characteristic features such as distinctive female heads and Late Gothic stance, but later influences from the Netherlands can be seen in his palette. He is considered one of the most important exporters of art into the countries around the Baltic Sea, standing alongside fellow countryman Bernt Notke.
