Biography:
Horatio Ross was born on 5 September 1801 at Rossie Castle, Forfarshire (near Montrose) about 35 miles northeast of Dundee, Scotland. He was named in honor of Horatio, Lord Nelson, an intimate friend of his father, Hercules Ross. Horatio Ross served as a member of parliament for the Montrose Burghs from 1831 to 1837. He was a sportsman, a pioneer amateur photographer and a marksman. He excelled in deerstalking and was judged the finest shot in Scotland. He died on 6 December 1886.
