Biography:

Howard Simon was born on July 22, 1902, in New York City to Samuel Simon, a salesman of general merchandise, and Bertha Simon. He had one brother. Before he was fifteen, Simon began to study art at the Art Students League of New York. He continued his studies at the National Academy of Design, where he won the 1924 Hallgarten Prize for his painting 'The Old Violinist'. Simon was a nationally celebrated painter in oils and watercolors and an illustrator in sketches and woodcut prints. In Arkansas, he was best known for his illustrations for the Charlie May Simon books. Simon provided illustrations for several dozen books, and his work is displayed in numerous museums. He died on October 15, 1979, in White Plains, New York.
