Biography:
Soga Dasoku was a Japanese painter and calligrapher who lived during the Muromachi period. He is known for his portraits of Zen masters, including the famous Portrait of Daruma. Although he is often attributed as the artist of this work, the calligraphy is actually attributed to Ikkyu Sojun, a prominent Zen monk and poet. Soga Dasoku died in 1481.
