Biography:
James Baylis Allen was a British engraver born in Birmingham on April 18, 1803. He was the son of a button-manufacturer and began his artistic training at the age of 18 by attending the drawing classes of John Vincent Barber and Samuel Lines. In 1824, he moved to London and found employment in the studio of the Findens. He is best known for his plates after J.M.W. Turner's drawings for the ‘Rivers of France’ and for the ‘Picturesque Views in England and Wales’. He died in Camden Town on January 10, 1876.
